What is
Mixing?
Mixing is the process of taking all of the individual recorded tracks and blending them together with not only volume but with EQ, Compression, Reverb, Delay & more. The goal of mixing is to bring out the best in your recording and create a seamless vibe for the listener to enjoy. This process can take a couple hours or multiple days depending on the work that needs to be done to the audio. There are two types of mixes, a 2-track mix means you have the wav or mp3 version of the instrumental and your vocal track outs. This gives the engineer less control over the instrumental levels and quality as they are forced to work with the exported mix from the producer the artist purchased the instrumental from. The second is a full track out mix, this means the artist provided the instrumental track outs (each individual instrument in the beat as their own audio tracks) and the vocal track outs. This ultimately gives the artist and engineer the most control over the songs final sound being that the engineer can now adjust each individual element from the instrumental and the vocals to blend them together the best way possible for that song.
What is
Mastering?
Mastering is the final step of audio post-production and the most misunderstood. The purpose of mastering your song is to further balance and polish the sonic elements of a mix and optimize playback quality across all systems & media formats.
Traditionally, mastering is done using tools like compression, equalization, limiting, saturation and stereo enhancement with the final export wav file of the mix. This process results in your mix sounding louder, bigger, wider and helps it compete with the songs everyone listens to on a daily basis.
